Pet Store Website – Case Study

Project Title: Paws & Tails – Modern Pet Store E-commerce Website
Role: Lead UI/UX Designer
Duration: 4 weeks
Tools Used: Figma, FigJam, Adobe Photoshop, Miro
Team: Solo project (collaborated with fictional development team for handoff)

Project Overview

Paws & Tails is a local pet store chain looking to expand its reach through a fresh, user-friendly online platform. The goal was to create an intuitive, joyful, and conversion-focused e-commerce website that reflects the love pet owners have for their animals while making shopping for pet supplies fast and enjoyable.

Challenge

  • Outdated website with poor mobile experience (over 65% of traffic was mobile)
  • High bounce rate (58%) and low conversion rate (1.2%)
  • Confusing navigation and product filtering
  • Lack of emotional connection – the previous site felt corporate instead of warm and pet-friendly
  • No clear customer journey for different pet types (dogs, cats, birds, fish, small animals)

My Role & Responsibilities

  • User research & competitive analysis
  • Information architecture & user flows
  • Wireframing (low and mid-fidelity)
  • High-fidelity UI design & interactive prototype
  • Design system creation (colors, typography, components)
  • Collaboration with stakeholder presentations

Research & Discovery

Conducted surveys with 120 pet owners and interviewed 8 regular customers. Key insights:

  • 78% shop separately for different pets and want quick access by pet type
  • Most users want to see “Best Sellers” and “New Arrivals” immediately
  • Trust signals (free shipping threshold, easy returns, vet-approved badges) heavily influence purchase
  • Users love seeing happy pet photos but hate slow-loading galleries

Design Decisions

1. Pet-Centric Navigation

Introduced a prominent horizontal pet selector on the homepage (Dog / Cat / Bird / Fish / Small Pet) that filters the entire experience instantly. This reduced clicks from 4–5 to just 1–2 when browsing specific pet categories.

2. Joyful Yet Professional Visual Language

  • Warm color palette: Soft orange (#FF6B35), sage green (#A8B5A2), cream background
  • Rounded corners and subtle paw-print motifs as decorative elements
  • Custom pet illustrations paired with real photography for personality
  • Playful micro-interactions (heart animation on “Add to Favorites”, paw cursor on hover)

3. Streamlined Product Pages

  • Sticky “Add to Cart” button on mobile
  • Clear benefit-oriented bullet points instead of long descriptions
  • Size/Frequency subscription toggle prominently displayed
  • Related products carousel based on pet type

4. Trust & Conversion Elements

  • Free shipping progress bar
  • “30-Day Happiness Guarantee” badge on every product
  • Live chat bubble with pet emoji responses
  • Customer photo reviews section

Results (Hypothetical Post-Launch Metrics)

  • Bounce rate decreased from 58% to 32%
  • Conversion rate increased from 1.2% to 3.8%
  • Average session duration +42%
  • Mobile purchases increased by 76%
  • Customer satisfaction score (post-purchase survey) 4.8/5

Key Takeaways

This project reinforced the importance of designing with emotion when the product is deeply tied to love and care (pets). Combining data-driven decisions with delightful details created an experience that feels both professional and heartwarming.

I’m particularly proud of the pet-type filtering system – it became the cornerstone of the entire user flow and received overwhelmingly positive feedback during usability testing.

Thank you for reading! I’d love to bring the same passion and user focus to your next project. Feel free to reach out!
